Remember that blazers are, basically, the middle ground between sport coats and suit jackets. This means that making them as versatile as possible is in your best interests, especially when starting your blazer collection. You can never go wrong with a crisp, classic, navy. It will pair well with semi-formal pants for events like daytime weddings. It also transitions just as easily into a casual look over jeans.
Your first few blazers will serve you best in solid colors, but there's plenty of room for some whimsy if you like patterns. Instead of the "country: inspired patterns on the sports coat, think tropical, paisley, plaid, and printed patterns. Or add some luxury with embroidery details or an ombre dye job. Alongside your classic navy and other neutrals, reds and bottle-greens look fantastic on blazers and are surprisingly versatile in a man's wardrobe. Look for classy metallic buttons or mother of pearl. If you're enjoying your adventures into the men's fashion world, it's worth knowing that many designers use the buttons on a blazer to showcase their name and allow you to flaunt who you are wearing.
Traditionally, blazers are very loud and colorful, and vertical stripes (called regatta stripes) are found across a variety of "gentlemen"s sports' where blazers are worn. You may want to avoid a vertical stripe on a loud base color for that reason if you don't feel entirely confident in the colors.
The modern legacy of this bright and bold history is that the blazer is an invitation to get exciting and daring with your fashion. You're not investing in a full suit, so you have more room to experiment, and you can venture past navy and solid neutrals once you have the confidence to. Be ready for compliments! 

A suit jacket or sport coat has its outer skin (the fabric) and 3 elements that make up its inner "skeleton" the lining, canvas, and shoulder pads. The lining encloses all the seams, makes it easier to slip the coat on and off, and adds a protective barrier between your under-clothes and the jacket.
The canvas, usually made of horsehair, helps create the structure of the garment. It stiffens the jacket, adds weight, helps reduce wrinkles, and allows the garment to shape to your body over time. Shoulder pads help give structure and form to the jacket so that it hangs properly.
Unstructured jackets don't have canvas interfacing and they only have an abbreviated lining in the shoulder area. This helps you slide the jacket on and off, gives just enough structure in the shoulder area to allow the jacket to fit properly, and offers some protection from sweat in the underarm area. Some unstructured jackets have a minimal shoulder pad, although it's far less than what you find in structured suit jackets or sport coats. This allows the jacket to have a "natural shoulder".
The lack of canvas doesn't mean that unstructured jackets will automatically wrinkle heavily, look rumpled and baggy. Luckily there have been advances in the fabrics themselves that will make the jackets retain their shape and look.
Unstructured jackets are meant to have a slightly fuller cut than structured jackets.if you are more comfortable having a closer-fitting jacket you can always take it in at the waist. Because unstructured jackets are meant to be more natural fitting and casual they aren't supposed to be as close fitting and structured as suits. leaving it a little looser allows you to add layers, even hoodies and sweaters, underneath.

Most blazers you see will be “single breasted”, which means they'll have two or three buttons, notched or peaked lapels (usually notched), and a narrow overlap of fabric at the front. Two button single breasted blazers are ranked as the most casual style, which means you can wear them open or closed, and usually over jeans or casual cuffed chinos.

Three button single breasted blazers are one small-ish step up the formal ladder. Like their two-buttoned cousins, you can wear these open or closed, but if closed, just fasten the top one or two buttons—never all three. You've got a bit more wiggle room when it comes to fit here. Single breasted jackets don't have to fit like a glove to look amazing. Double breasted on the other hand.

Double breasted jackets are definitely the fanciest, the boldest and the riskiest members of the blazer family, but when they work, they really work. Double breasted blazers usually have six or eight buttons, peaked lapels and that distinctive extra bit of fabric, which wraps around your torso. They must, must, must fit perfectly. There's no room for error here. And don't wear them with jeans—you want formal chinos or even suit pants for these guys.
