Chinese mainland
In ancient China, shorts were called 裈, and underwear was worn under the lower garment. Outer shorts are also considered sportswear, summer school uniforms or casual wear. In mainland China, it is considered impolite for adults to wear shorts, so that some modern high-end places still do not accept people wearing shorts.
Hong Kong
The situation is similar to that in mainland China, but due to the influence of British customs, it is also used as a school uniform for primary school students.
Japan
In Japan, shorts are a kind of clothing designed for children, and parents like to ask children to wear shorts. The craze originated about a decade after World War II, when parents began to force their children to wear "very short shorts," also known as hot pants. Hot pants are no longer popular in Japan. The length of shorts worn by Japanese children has been lengthened, but parents still have the habit of asking children to wear shorts.
